You're starting to come into your own and develop your more mature personality, but you're still young enough that much of your life and surroundings aren't in your control. Being patient, listening, and having a thick skin are some key pieces of advice for those who go shopping with their tween. And don't forget: for a pre-teenager, appearance is just as important on Halloween as any other day. Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice! BEETLEJUICE! Just say the name three times and he will appear, ready to scare you and gross you out as well. Tim Burton's 1988 classic starring Michael Keaton as the ghost with the most himself, Beetlejuice sure burned an image into many minds. Those who were older at the time probably got a good laugh from all the ridiculous sight gags featured in the movie while kids were probably terrified out of their minds. There was a time when children’s horror wasn’t a mainstream concept. Kids were either forbidden from reading or watching horror, or they had to watch made-for-adults horror alongside their parents. But then R.L. Stine started writing Goosebumps, his wildly successful series of horror novellas for children. How successful? Over 350 million copies sold successful! Then came the Goosebumps television series, games, and other merchandise. And now there’s a feature film starring Jack Black. (Talk about finding a niche, R.L.! Can we call you R.L.?) You’d be hard pressed to find a stronger director/writer one-two punch in horror cinema than what Wes Craven accomplished with The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes. They are quintessential 70s horror—relentless, disturbing, and violent. There were a lot of movies like that in the 70s, but Craven was one of the few to do exploitation-horror well. In a genre which very rarely births a director that becomes a household name, Craven defied all odds amidst the turbulent Hollywood studio system.
