Ever wonder how a Halloween costume transforms into a character who looks like they just stepped out of a gothic fantasy novel? Sometimes it takes a flowing cape, a dramatic hairstyle, and a little makeup magic. Other times, it takes a professional who knows exactly where to place the shadows!
At HalloweenCostumes.com, we get to watch these transformations happen all year long. For this installment of Inside HC, we're introducing Gina, one of the creative minds behind our studio makeup, and taking you behind the scenes of a vampire makeup tutorial she created with us. Along the way, you'll learn how to contour like a pro, blend dramatic vampire eyes, and adapt the finished look for dark romance and romantasy characters.
Gina: Makeup Artist Behind the Magic

Meet Gina, our Creative Services Coordinator and one of the talented people responsible for bringing our costume models to life! She joined HalloweenCostumes.com in 2018, but her love of makeup started long before she ever stepped into our studio. After earning her marketing degree, she worked for Estée Lauder, where she received professional makeup training and continued developing skills she'd loved practicing since childhood.
For Gina, Halloween makeup is the perfect combination of beauty, creativity, and movie magic. She's always been fascinated by special effects and the practical techniques used to turn actors into extraordinary characters. So, when an opportunity came along that combined costumes, makeup, and special effects, it was an easy decision joining our team and bringing life to our looks.
Behind the Scenes at HalloweenCostumes.com
Every studio transformation begins with a costume and a creative direction. Sometimes our product developers or buyers provide specific notes or inspiration boards. Other times, Gina gets the freedom to develop a character's appearance herself. She considers the costume, the model, the available accessories, and the personality the finished look should communicate.
And she often has to do it quickly! Gina regularly styles hair in 15 minutes or less to keep the photography schedule moving. Elaborate special-effects characters can require more time, but she's become remarkably good at finding creative solutions under pressure. "I thrive on the 'under pressure' zone when it comes to hair and makeup," she says.
For this particular session, we gave Gina an opportunity to demonstrate a vampire makeup look with a decidedly romantic twist. The result combines rich reds, dark lips, dramatic eyes, and sculpted features into a character who could belong in a gothic castle or the pages of a romantasy novel.
How to Create a Romantic Vampire Look
Ready to see how a professional makeup artist creates a vampire? Gina walked us through the process, sharing practical techniques that beginners can use at home. The best part is that you don't need years of experience to try them! The finished makeup features carefully placed contour, layered plum and burgundy eye shadow, shimmering accents, and dramatic dark lips. Combined with a red-and-black gothic outfit and romantic hairstyle, the result is elegant, mysterious, and just a little dangerous.
Let's break down the techniques and see how you can use them to create your own vampire or dark romantasy character.
Step 1: Prepare Your Skin for Vampire Makeup
Every great makeup transformation starts with a good foundation—literally! Gina emphasizes that makeup looks best on properly hydrated, moisturized skin. The right foundation depends on your individual skin type, so consider whether your skin is dry, oily, or somewhere in between before choosing a product.
For vampire makeup, you can use a foundation close to your natural complexion or experiment with a slightly paler appearance. The goal isn't necessarily to make your skin completely white. It's to create a smooth base that allows the shadows, highlights, and dramatic colors to stand out. Gina likes to build makeup in layers, adding details as the character develops. She calls this approach “Makeup Lasagna,” because it's easier to add more makeup than to remove too much!
Step 2: Learn the Secret to Vampire Contouring
Contouring can feel intimidating, especially when you're not sure where to start. Gina understands why beginners sometimes avoid it, but she has a surprisingly simple tip: start with the cheeks! First, make a fish face by sucking in your cheeks. The hollow that appears beneath your cheekbone is a helpful reference point. Instead of placing your contour directly in that hollow, Gina recommends moving approximately one finger's width higher, because blending naturally moves makeup downward. Starting slightly above the hollow helps the finished shadow settle where you want it, rather than dragging the contour too low.
You can use a brush, sponge, or your fingers to blend, depending on what feels comfortable. Some people love makeup sponges, while others find them inconvenient and prefer using their hands. Clean tools and hands are important either way. For a more dramatic vampire, you can also contour around the eyes and along the nose to emphasize the face's natural structure. But if you're new to contouring, focus on mastering the cheekbones first. That single technique can make a remarkable difference!

Step 3: Create a Smooth Base for Smoky Vampire Eyes
A vampire's eyes can tell an entire story before the character says a word. Are they seductive? Dangerous? Ancient and mysterious? The colors and placement of your eye shadow help establish that personality. Gina begins by preparing the eyelid from the lash line toward the brow bone. A suitable eye-shadow base or primer helps the colors adhere and reduces creasing, giving you a better surface for the dramatic layers to come.
Next comes the transitional shade. This is a medium-toned color blended into the natural crease of the eye. It helps connect the lighter and darker colors so the finished makeup looks smooth rather than patchy. And here's another reason Gina loves her Makeup Lasagna philosophy: you can always add more color later!
Step 4: Build Dramatic Vampire Eye Shadow in Layers
For this vampire look, Gina worked with a palette of plums, reds, and dark shades. These colors are wonderfully versatile because they complement gothic costumes, romantic vampire outfits, dark faerie looks, and even more traditional formal clothing. Start with your transitional color, then gradually introduce deeper shades. Gina recommends building the darkest color from the outer corner of the eye and blending it upward. Each new layer should overlap slightly with the previous one so the colors melt together.
If your eye shadow looks patchy, the problem may be that the different shades aren't meeting and blending properly. Don't panic if the application looks a little messy at first! You can soften the edges and connect the colors as you continue working. You can also remove excess powder from your brush before blending. As long as the remaining color isn't darker than the area you're trying to soften, you're generally moving in the right direction.
Finish by adding eyeliner and mascara to bring extra definition to the eyes. For a more dramatic vampire, extend the smoky effect around the outer corners or beneath the lower lash line.

Step 5: Add Shimmer for an Ethereal Vampire Look
Vampire makeup doesn't have to be completely dark and matte. In fact, a little shimmer can make the deeper colors look even more dramatic, especially in romantasy vibes! Gina accented the darker eye makeup with shimmering products to create an ethereal appearance. The contrast between the reflective highlights and rich plum shadows gives the eyes extra dimension, especially when light catches the makeup.
This is a particularly useful technique for dramatic characters. A vampire queen might have a subtle metallic glow, while a dark faerie could use more pronounced shimmer to suggest supernatural magic. You can also experiment with cool blues or earthy browns instead of the traditional red-and-plum palette. Gina favors darker shades for this aesthetic, but matching the makeup to your costume is just as important as following a particular color scheme.
Recommendation: For guys joining in the romantic vampire, you're already seeing a lot of burgundy, black, and red. Consider a surprise with plums, dark blues, and silver to give yourself a surprising edge.
Step 6: Finish with Lips, Hair, and Character Details
With the eyes complete, it's time to give your vampire a little extra personality! Gina often begins with a neutral lip color in studio work because it provides a flexible base for different characters. For this transformation, the finished look features dramatic dark lipstick that complements the red outfit and smoky eyes.
Hair is just as important. The model's dark hair is styled into a romantic updo with loose curls framing the face, creating a beautiful contrast between elegant styling and supernatural makeup. For your own vampire, you could choose long flowing waves, a polished gothic hairstyle, or something more wild and untamed. A pair of costume fangs, a dramatic necklace, or a dark lace accessory can help complete the transformation.
The finished character should feel like all the pieces belong together: makeup, hair, costume, and attitude!

From Vampire Makeup to Dark Romance and Romantasy
One of the best things about Gina's vampire makeup is how easily the techniques can translate into other fantasy characters. You don't need to start over to create a completely different look. Sometimes all it takes is a new color palette, a different hairstyle, or a few accessories.
For a romantic vampire, keep the sculpted cheekbones, smoky plum eyes, and dramatic lips. Add flowing curls, elegant jewelry, and a regal costume to suggest an immortal character with centuries of stories to tell. A richly colored outfit or dramatic cape can reinforce the character's mysterious appearance. Explore our vampire costumes for inspiration, from traditional counts to glamorous vampiresses. You might discover the perfect foundation for your own supernatural love story!
Dark Romance: Gothic Glamour
Dark romance takes many of the same makeup techniques and pushes them toward a moodier, more dramatic appearance. Deep burgundy lips, smoky eyes, and defined facial contours work beautifully with black lace, dark gowns, and ornate accessories. The trick is creating a character who looks both elegant and dangerous. Browse our gothic costumes for dramatic silhouettes and accessories that complement this style. Add a few roses, a mysterious expression, and perhaps a tragic backstory for good measure!
Romantasy Fae: A Little Otherworldly Magic
Want to turn your vampire into a dark faerie or enchanted royal? Keep the layered eye makeup, but experiment with shimmering highlights, violet accents, and more whimsical hair accessories. Braids, crowns, pointed ears, and dramatic curls can help shift the character from gothic vampire to supernatural fantasy. A flowing gown or fantasy-inspired outfit from our Renaissance costumes can make a wonderful starting point. Whether you're creating a faerie queen, immortal sorceress, or mysterious forest guardian, the makeup helps tell the story.
Hair Makes the Character
When Gina prepares a model for a shoot, she prefers to use natural hair whenever possible. A few curls, added volume, and some creative styling can make a surprising difference in how a character looks. But when a costume calls for an unusual hair color or distinctive style, wigs can become an essential part of the transformation.
Sometimes Gina prepares wigs before the model even arrives, saving time during a busy studio day. Other times, the team photographs a costume with and without a wig to show different styling possibilities. For a vampire, sleek hair can suggest aristocratic elegance, while messy waves and curls create a wilder, more romantic appearance. For dark fae characters, braids, crowns, and dramatic volume can make the look feel even more enchanted.
Just remember: check whether a wig is heat-safe before using curling irons or straighteners. Many synthetic costume wigs cannot tolerate high temperatures.
Gina's Halloween Makeup Tips for Beginners
What's the Biggest Mistake People Make with Vampire Makeup?
According to Gina, the biggest mistake isn't choosing the wrong eye shadow or drawing an imperfect line. It's being afraid to experiment! Makeup is supposed to be fun, especially at Halloween. If something doesn't turn out the way you imagined, you can remove it and try again. Practice helps you discover which techniques work best for your face and your character.
How Can You Make Vampire Makeup Last All Night?
Start with products suited to your skin type. Gina emphasizes that the wrong foundation can affect how makeup wears throughout the evening. A quality setting spray can help improve longevity, while proper skin preparation gives everything a better foundation. If you're planning to dance, trick-or-treat, or spend hours in costume, consider bringing a few essentials for touch-ups.
Can You Create Vampire Makeup in 15 Minutes?
Absolutely! Gina suggests beginning with a pale or neutral complexion, then using contour and highlight to create depth. Add smoky eyeliner and cool blue, purple, or plum shades around the eyes for a mysterious appearance. A dramatic lip color and a pair of costume fangs can finish the look. You don't need an elaborate transformation to create a recognizable vampire!
What About Fake Blood and Special Effects?
Gina notes that different types of fake blood create different effects. Fresh-looking blood, dried blood, and thicker coagulated varieties can all help tell a character's story. For a romantic vampire, a subtle amount near the mouth might be enough. A more monstrous character could call for something dramatic. Always use products intended for the area where they're applied and check for potential staining.
How Should You Remove Heavy Halloween Makeup?
Once the party is over, remove your makeup with a product suited to your skin. Gina recommends thoroughly cleansing afterward, including a second wash with your usual facial cleanser. Follow with your normal skincare routine and moisturizer as needed. If you've used specialty adhesives or prosthetics, follow their removal instructions rather than pulling them away from the skin.
Create Your Own Vampire or Romantasy Character
You don't need a professional studio to bring a supernatural character to life. Start with an idea, choose a costume that fits the story, and experiment with makeup until the character begins to emerge. Maybe you're an ancient vampire with a taste for royal fashion. Maybe you're a mysterious gothic heroine attending a masquerade. Or perhaps you're a dark faerie who's spent centuries guarding an enchanted forest.
Whatever character you imagine, the techniques Gina demonstrated offer a wonderful starting point. Build your makeup in layers, experiment with contour and color, and let the costume inspire your finishing touches.
