2015 political costume ideas

The next presidential election is still over a year way, but with all of the pop culture coverage the candidates are receiving, doesn't it feel like you'll be casting your ballot tomorrow? Perhaps the added attention is due to the fact that this is a particularly colorful group of candidates. Among the contendors, we have: take-no-nonsense Hillary Clinton, campaigning to become the first Mrs. President, a multi-billionaire whose comb over is arguably as famous as his "it's gonna be huge" catchphrase, the longest serving independent in US history, a mysterious figure gaining steam in Iowa known as "Deez Nuts," and even award winning recording artist, producer, fashion designer, and speech-interupter Kanye West. (He has thrown his hat in the ring for 2020...)

With all of this white house hubbub, you can bet 2015 will be a very popular year for political costumes. Since we are always campaigning for you to be the best dressed costume party attendee, here are five helpful political candidate DIY costume tutorials to get you started. Four more beers! Four more...

DIY Bride of Frankenstein

The Bride of Frankenstein has been an iconic Halloween look for decades, although it’s one that relatively few people attempt themselves. Much of that comes from its perceived difficulty, from the dress to the makeup to that elaborate hairstyle. But this DIY experiment doesn’t require an M.D. in Mad Science, and we’ve got everything you need to bring the Bride of Frankenstein costume to life!

DIY Evil Dead Ash Halloween Costume

On a scale of one to groovy, how excited are you for the premiere of Ash vs. Evil Dead on Starz this Halloween? In our eyes, Bruce Campbell is one of the reigning kings of horror, and his half-slapstick/half-serious portrayal of Ash in the Evil Dead movies is a staple of October viewing. We just know that the new TV series starring Bruce himself will be a perfect addition to the franchise canon. Armed with a boomstick, a chainsaw, and a gallon of fake blood, we set out to create a sexy, girl costume version of Ash, our hero.

Powerpuff Villains Header.jpg

Chances are if you grew up in the 90s, you at least knew who the Powerpuff Girls are. The popular animated kids show starred Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, 3 little girls with superpowers who fought crime in the city of Townsville (yes, that’s the real name of the fictional city the writers chose). The show debuted in the late 90s and was part of the movement that brought anime-style animation to shows in the US. While the girls were clearly the focus of the show, it was the villains who were downright weird. If you want a fun Powerpuff Girls-themed couples costume for Halloween, try out this DIY on how to dress as 2 of the most colorful villains from the show: Fuzzy Lumpkins and HIM.

DIY Group Rugrats cotume

Nickelodeon introduced us to Rugrats in the early 1990s and the show has been reprised a few different times in crossover television movies and even a spin-off series called All Grown Up! The original series was without a doubt the most popular rendition of the show as it followed the lives of three year old Angelica along with the baby and toddler combination of Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil. After earning many awards, the show was cancelled in 2004 and reruns became increasingly sporadic as time passed.

A few weeks ago, the new Nickelodeon television block, Splat, included a Rugrats marathon featuring episodes with Reptar. Watching all those Rugrats episodes had us feeling a bit nostalgic, so we decided to create a group costume of the favorite characters just in time for Halloween. So, if you are planning to head out on Halloween night with a few of your friends, this DIY tutorial will give you a recognizable look that everyone will love. “It’s going to take years, maybe even months, of hard work.” Just kidding, the hardest part is going to be deciding who gets to be Angelica!

Robin-Williams-DIY Tribute Costumes

“Well sir, I don’t know how much value I have in this universe. But I do know I made a few people happier than they would’ve been without me, as long as I know that, I’m as rich as I’ll ever need to be.”

– Robin Williams as Mork, from Mork and Mindy

Robin Williams' passing in 2014 left the world a little less bright and a little less funny. Mr. Williams was one of those rare performers who could inspire rolling laughter and flowing tears in the same scene. It is now more than one year after his tragic passing and we still miss having him around. We have always been inspired by the amazing characters that Robin Williams has portrayed over his long and robust career. In honor of this colorful cast of characters, we would like to offer up this group costume idea in honor of one of the best funnymen around.
