Well, in the old days, it wasn't a court system and a deliberating jury. It was all about the showdown! The whole town would gather, hide behind their doors, shield their eyes... and then take a good long peek to see who would still be standing.
Of course, things have changed. The old High Noon obligation is pretty outdated. One, that's lunch time. Who wants to fight for truth and justice on an empty tummy!? Second, there are way more exciting times to arrange your duel for the future of the settlement. How about with a moody red sun setting in the background? Or the full moon? Heck, we might not even need to go the whole pistol route if you have pools of shadow to really make you intimidating!
