Over the past three months, 24 carefully-selected artists have created original art pieces using authentic replica Darth Vader helmets. In the spirit of the Vader Project by DKE Toys, each artist was given creative freedom to interpret the helmet as he or she saw fit. The top three helmets were chosen as winners, and are noted below with ribbons. Proceeds benefitted the Midwest Art Catalyst and the Miracle League of North Mankato.

As I began thinking about all of my favorite monsters, the idea came to me right away! Darth Vader and Frankenstein was the perfect combination! I started by giving him a name “FRANKENVADER”. I incorporated some of Frankenstein’s life into my Vader Helmet and I incorporated Star Wars by including some Star Wars symbols! My FRANKENVADER glows in the dark, too!

My inspiration was the final shot of Vader in Ep. III, as he and the Emperor oversee the construction of the first Death Star. You sense he’s replaying his descent and is haunted by Padme and his children. Padme’s holding the necklace Anakin gave her and given angel wings in reference to his first words to her. The negative space of the wings becomes the flames of Mustafar, where his change was finished.

I wanted to do the opposite of what Vader represented in the movies - evil. The Lotus Flower grows out of muddy water and opens each night, revealing its inner beauty, then sinks underwater to be forgotten. The Koi show a great example of determination and perseverance. They stand for individual journeys to overcome life's obstacles. Everyone has the ability to change and to be seen in a different light.

When starting a custom figure project, I search for a figure to get me headed in the right direction. I landed on one of my favorites. Skeletor. I wanted to keep elements of Vader, such as the high light saber handle and Empire logo on his chest. Now imagine if Skeletor found both halves of the Sword of Power and was able to open a portal to another dimension in a galaxy far, far away...

I wanted to be playful and colorful. I thought an animal would appeal to kids and the charities. A lion with its mouth open fit the helmet shape well. I covered the entire surface with Wikki Stix because it creates a very interesting texture. Wikki Stix are self-stick and no glue is needed. However, I did coat the final art piece with clear puzzle glue to protect it and keep things in place during shipping.

My instinct was to give the helmet a dark, serious mood - an homage to the movies. But I went against my instincts to see if I could create an oxymoron that’s a statement about our culture and society. From the dark feel and special effects of Star Wars to the bright colors and disco feel of Saturday Night Fever - my piece is a critique of how social norms dictate who we are (or at least who we pretend to be).

The pyscho-sexual political portrayal of the 1950s-esque housewife as victim then villain is not entirely different than the plot arch of Darth Vader, the ultimate cinema villain. Blurring the context of one with the other is meant to highlight the absurdity of perceiving anyone as one-dimensional.

I feel this is a great way to be totally creative and contribute to a good cause. I've always been a huge fan of Star Wars and to take Vader and create something totally opposite was a definite creative challenge. I have a slight obsession with owls, so when I saw the helmet, I knew exactly what I wanted it to be. After a few hundred feathers and lots of glue - you get the feather madness that I call Darth Hoot.

I wanted to keep the dark side feel, hence the reason I ended up making it all bloody and gory. If Star Wars and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre had a baby, it would look like my helmet, or if Vader was the antagonist in Silence of the Lambs instead. Bottom line, I just wanted to create something that fans would love, because the true end result is the benefit from the auction.

I’ve been intrigued with Vader since I was a little boy, especially that even though he was the epitome of the Dark Side, in the end he still had love for his son and rebelled against his master at the cost of his own life. My design illustrated this concept. The dragon represents the Dark Side and the old samurai represents the aged wisdom that will fight at any cost.

Doing the Vader helmet appealed to me because even as a kid I was fascinated more with the dark side than I was with Luke and the gang. Why didn't he just give in and join his pops at the Death Star? Seemed like a no-brainer to me. If I could have my way, the candles would be burning and a waterfall of blood streaming from his mouth with speakers inside playing Krallice or Immortal on a never ending loop.

I thought it would be fun to represent Vader's helmet as an archaeological artifact, half-buried on Endor thousands of years after his death. I figured metals like bronze, steel, and iron are dug up all the time. High tech armor wouldn't be going anywhere fast. This reflects the notion that deeds and legacy live on, but there is still is a world without us--no matter how powerful or mighty someone may be.

"Bugs in the Helmet" started with the concept that Vader's Helmet became a burrow for bugs on Endor after his body was burned there. I made the helmet bronze in order to create more contrast for this diorama. I enjoyed the concept that the dark force surrounding that iconic helmet had seeped into the environment and was passed on into the nearest life forms- these bugs.

My current series is inspired by Peruvian posters made in the chicha style. These hand-made prints use neon colors, commercial lettering and are used to promote working class events. This series creates images that pay homage to the chicha style, but reinterprets and re-conceptualizes it. Specifically, I like to integrate images and words from figurative forms, urban landscapes and the language of graffiti.

I used testors spray paint on the mask and brushed on the wood grain with liquitex acrylics and stained it with liquid watercolors. The helmet is all airbrush work using a silver base with transparent yellow orange and red to get a true fire look. I clear coated the entire thing to get it glossy and so it can take a scratch or two. Vader's burial reminded me of a Bonfire as a child.

After 1,649 viewings, the original trilogy still means the world to me. As a kid, the movies influenced how I talked, imagined the future and rode my bike like it was an X-Wing fighter. I associate the movies with the best things in life, like eating donuts. Question: Is anything better than eating donuts? Answer: Yes. Floating in a never-ending galaxy made up of wonderful tasting, planet-sized donuts! Duh. Thanks, Star Wars!

For this project I wanted to create a "window" into the confectionery thoughts of Darth Vader. I imagined a Vader that obsessively collects and plays with toys, and LOVES candy and sugary treats. The colors I used in this piece attempt to depict the whimsy and innocence of this imagined Vader. I loved having the opportunity to customize and modify something I have spent years collecting and treasuring.

Megan Hoogland, a renowned female tattoo artist, is known for recreating an image with her own added style. This is prominent in her Darth Vader Mask. My piece revolved around an expression of my own beliefs that nice guys do finish last, but only for the right reasons. It's been a recurring scenario that's been a part of my life, and I felt expressing that artistically would fulfill that satisfaction. To create additions to the helmet, John used a mix of Kleenex and Modge Podge to create a Paper Mache, so it was moldable, yet hardened. This made it possible to attach all the pieces to the mask with a firm hold. He then used acrylic to complete the project. John is a fan of Star Wars and war history, so the combination of the two is what makes this piece, Apocalypse Vader, come to life.

Gabriel builds SFX props for film, television and commercials. He refurbished many pieces from the original mask when creating this statue bust, thus the title- "Vader from Vader Unmasked". Being a Star Wars fan, he enjoyed the opportunity to work on this project.
