I know, you do not want to go to a comic book convention but in all honesty, you do not even have to like comics to enjoy comic book conventions because there are so many other aspects of nerd culture on display that comics are almost incidental to the whole thing. So instead of fighting it, why not join in at one of these great events highlighting the world of comics, collectibles, science fiction, anime, horror and steampunk this summer?

Little Red Riding Hood is one of the most popular fairy tales still told to this day. French storyteller Charles Perrault first published this classic tale in 1697, known then as Little Red Cap. Even though the story has been adapted several times over the past few centuries, Little Red remains one of the most recognizable fairy tale characters of all time. Described by the Brothers Grimm as “...a dear little girl who was loved by everyone who looked at her” and that had “a little riding hood of red velvet, which suited her so well that she would never hear anything else; so she was always called ‘Little Red Riding Hood’”. Her little red cape has been the one constant in the ever-changing persona of Little Red Riding Hood.

Three colors describe Snow White’s features: snow white skin, red cheeks, and ebony hair. Snow White’s classic physical appearance was first described in the fairytale “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” by the Brothers Grimm. While there have been many story, film, and TV adaptations of the classic tale, the costume of Snow White has been changed for each version. However, the image of Disney’s gown stands out even today as the iconic Snow White outfit. Everyone knows of the classic Snow White dress from the animated film: yellow skirt, high white collar, and a blue tunic with puffed sleeves. However, with each rendition of the classic fairy tale, a new look for Snow White is created. One thing is for certain, though, and that is that she’ll always be the fairest of them all.

Learning how to make historical costumes can be useful for various events: reenactments, school plays, even book reports. For beginners, however, it’s difficult to know where to start. Elaborate dresses from movies can be wonderful sources for inspiration, but attempting one of those on a first try is as ambitious as replicating a Van Gogh without previous painting experience. Just as one needs to learn the basics of brush strokes and blending to paint, a costumer needs to learn the basic regarding fabrics and styles of clothing worn during the specified era. This is an introduction and resource for those interested in 18th century France, the time of Marie Antoinette, Victor Hugo, Versailles, peasants and a glamorous aristocracy. This guide includes the basics on what clothing was worn by both women and men, images, and a list of instructional and contextual resources.

Most cultures have an event where they pay tribute to the dead by performing traditional rituals, dressing up in costumes or throwing a huge celebration.
